Laurence S. Covington is a recent retiree from the University of the District of Columbia. Professor Covington taught in the English Department for 17 years. His dedication to his profession and the students and communities he serves, is widely recognized and applauded – never willing to live one mind behind! Larry’s love of language and the spoken word led him early on to study dialects and practice diction by reading the Bible aloud. He studied regional dialects from a coach at East Carolina University during his last year in Marine Corps! His rich vocal qualities were recognized and utilized moving through the ranks.

A native Washingtonian , he served in the United States Marine Corps for 4 years and a Viet Nam veteran. Over the years,  Professor Covington’s career in what was then known as RTVMP, began as a paid intern with Black Pioneer TV News Journalist, Max Robinson at WTOP-TV (now WUSA-TV) in Washington, D.C. This opportunity led to him being cast in a speaking role in the internationally acclaimed TMC CLASSIC movie, ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN, 1976. His first radio announcer gig was with WCMS FM “where country music swings everyday”! NEWS Norfolk VA. His verbal and vocal prowess often surprised his station fans when he visually appeared!
